Cellulose derived from wood pulp has been used for many years in the manufacture of polymers and other products. This includes:

cellulose butyrate screwdriver handles, pneumatic tubing
rayon a silk substitute, manufactured from wood pulp
4-oxopentanoic acid (levulinic acid)
used in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, plastics and rubbers, and the fuel additive methyl tetrahydrofuran (MTHF)Newer processes are now available that can make use of cellulose-containing waste from paper-making, paper recycling and agricultural residues
I think you'll find it's only the screwdrivers that smell, or nutdrivers with plastic handles. Plastic out-gasses.When using those tools, I leave the drawer open a little. It seems to help.
That's funny I always thought that my tool box smelled bad. I even changed the small plastic carry box to a metal box. Never said anything to anyone. "No a manly topic" Then the other day I was at a friends garage & opened his tall metal box and the same smell hit me. Bob said its the plastic & rubber handles that give off the smell.
PS I put one of those car Trees in w/my tools. Now my hand tools have a sweet stinky smell..........
That's what I was gonna suggest, also ... but probably rust during dry cycle.
You need to get some oil on them right after cleaning.
I moved the old dishwasher to the garage when we bought a new one.
Someday, I will hook it up to wash with cleaner - no rinse - no draining.
... kinda like a parts cleaner without scrubbing.

U
yeah i think its just the plastic ones...almost smells like puke...for kicks tomorrow lets try and clean them with armorall and see what that does
Have you tried some potpourri in the corner of each shelf ????
I use to to notice the same thing until I left the drawer open one night and the cat s*#t in it.
I just thought they smelled bad before.....
NO...I always thought the smell was there as a defense against the wife borrowing them and not putting them back where she got them....no way she will keep them in the kitchen junk drawer smelling like that.
Tools are supposed to stink.....it's a manly thing.
The key here is to use your tools. Then they won't smell. It must be nice to get to the point where they can be stored away, with all my junk, that day may never come.
I heard if you clean your tool too much you'll go blind
