82 or 81?? I'm getting ready to purchase a low mileage car and beginning to wonder about the relative merits of FI vs carb. What's the feeling of you experienced owners? Just another thing to go wrong or a real improvement?

They are both low horsepower computer cars......

I prefer the old school low tech approach.
When I bought mine I stayed away from them for that reason.

The 78 was bad enough when I bought it, but then it didnt take long to fix the horsepower issue either.

I have a 82 and its been nothing but trouble free.104k on mine.CFI is alot cleaner , those computer carb vettes are nothing but a vacum lines everywere nightmare.

Not bashing 80-81 owners , just my opinion.

Your right..I have a California 80...which was the original computer....ever put on a Corvette...it later appeared on all 81s..CCC .....You cant do much to modify horsepower...but its been prettty reliable...

My view is get the best car between 82-81...either system will run well if properly tuned and neither will be really fast...but you`ll turn heads regardless..

Actually thinking about it..the 82..having the OD tranny 700R4...is an advantage over the 81s 3 speed...not in reliability but fuel mileage..and a more aggressive 1st gear....but you can get a 4 speed manual...81 if you look hard enough...not so in 82..

but your 80 is an LG4.. a 305 boat anchor

The 82 also has lighter body panels, thinner glass, the thicker hanflsahfts and stub axles for larger u joints (all manuals have that in 80 & 81)

No..I replaced the 305..yrs ago...true it did come with the 305..but I now have a 350...especially since originality isnt that important for a 1980 just wanted a driver..with some spunk...but I have to keep the original intake and carb..or I wont pass Ca...emissions..
Anyway the LG4 was rated at 180 net HP..and the L81..was 190 net HP....not that much real world difference..where it does come into play is when you want to rebuild..you want a 350...not 305..if you want to go fast..
