I bought a 71 a couple months back. The previous owner lost the door keys. Any suggestions???? I hate to pull the doors apart and replace the locks. I tried to contact some old owners, but no luck.
Tried the ignition key. It goes into the lock, turns almost an 1/8 of a turn either way but the locks do not unlock. Tried both doors, both the same. It feels like the key is right, but I do not want to break it off. How far does it take to get it to pop?

It takes a quarter turn from center to unlock it. A little less than a quarter from center to lock it.
Sounds like the wrong key.
I suspect the ignition lock was changed so now it doesn't match the doors anymore.
You can buy a matched set of door locks and ignition switch with keys from Corvette Central for $58.80. Or, if you remove the door locks and a locksmith should be able to re-key the locks to match your ignition key.

I had locksmith do a key for a car I had bought. He had a key that looked like it was made of wax. He inserted that key, turned it, which made an impression. In a few minutes later I had a metal key that worked.

Yep... $50 and a locksmith can solve all your problems
Did you try some WD-40 or similar in the locks? They may just be corroded from lack of use. The metal in the locks is just a pot-metal and they corrod if not used.

You can buy a new set of door locks and spare keys from ecklers.com for $23.00 it takes about 20 mins to install. Even if you go to the locksmith there is no telling if the lock cylinder is bad. .02

Problem with that is that your key won't fit the ignition and you would have to carry an extra key.
Get the whole set for $58.80 and then you've got a new ignition switch and everything matches the way it should.
The door key is supposed to be the same as ignition and the round key fits the rear compartment.
No way to re-key without removing from the door that I know of. Unless you have the knock-out number that came with the original key.
on my 73 the round key opens the doors,, the only thing the square one does is start the car, same with my 89 g m c safari,,the ignition key is square---- doors are round,, on every chevy i ever owned,,,ford was the one with the same key for ignition and door locks

When my 63 was shipped to me several years ago, the door keys were not in the car. I called a locksmith, and he made a new key using the method mentioned above - had a new key in about 10 minutes.

Your car has been converted. If you buy a replacement set of door locks only, they will come with a round key.
Corvettes from 1969 thru at least 1977 (not sure about 78 to 82 might have been the same way) came from the factory with the square ignition key fitting the doors too. The round key fits the center compartment.
Check your Owner's Manual, it tells you that near the beginning of the book.
