Default '78 Vette Value?

I drove by a Vette the other day. It says it's a '78. At a glance it looked OK, but it looks like it may have had some body damage and was repainted a canary yellow.

On the off chance, I am going to get the VIN so I can determine if it is an anniversary edition. They are asking $8k for it. It is in a small town, so I doubt the owner knows what they have.

So, is $8k too much for a non-anniversary edition?
How much is an Anniversary edition worth?

TIA,
Humble CFOT & C4 Guy

i think any vette is worth the price someone is asking, so long as it is able to run and looks decent.

All 78's were "Anniversary Editions" and came with the 25th anniversary emblems.

Check the frame closely.

I only paid 7 for mine last year.

There is a silver anniversary paint sceme that you may be thinking of. Not really rare or more valuable but it is a nice looking color combo. Of course there was the Pace Car but I doubt if someone would paint one yellow.

A local Vette shop has a couple C3 shells and are asking ~$25k.

One might run. The other didn't even have an engine, IIRC.

That was last Fall.

What were these?

And-
Anyone interested in more info about that other one? I am NOT in the market for a C3, but I thought I'd point CF in the right direction. And it looked like a paint-over.

Actually, most are not idiots. This town has some shrewd peeps, but almost zero Vettes.

We think this is an inheritance vehicle and the heir has no idea what they have. Not a 'car town' that much is certain.

The January C3 market report for 1978 Corvettes in Corvette Magazine summed it up this way:

1978 T-top (non-anniv paint)ranged from $17,000(show ready) to under $5000 (needs TLC)

1978 SA ranged from $19,000 to $7100

1978 Pace Car was $32,000 to $9500

Data from sales...averages..

Good to know!

I'll be getting the VIN and phone # in case anyone wants the info to consider a restore. They can PM me and I'll pass it along.

There was a 1978 SA here locally that was basically in parts..engine out, interior was shot...general condition indicated vette had not been maintained at all...asking price was $2500...it never sold...

Most 78,79,80 year vettes I've seen that sold for $8000 were resonably in good condition with no major mechanical issues..

i only paid $4500 for mine. it smoked and i bought it with the intention of installing new engine.
found pcv hose pinched flat, repaired and smoke stopped.
that saved me some money for other projects.

solid frame and other than surface rust i treated a solid birdcage too.

Not by a long shot. I've seen some truly ridiculous asking prices.
