While getting ready to paint my half shafts I started just sanding rust on my 75 and low and Behold what do I see a yellow grease mark with the #12. Heard alot about these marks but I had never seen one. So any way .Question while Im at it should I drop the tank to look for the Build sheet(and paint) or what ever they call it now ?And what color should the half-shafts be ? Thanks everyone for your answers
Honestly, the build sheet from a 75 will only be worthwhile to your interest.
... hardly worth the effort of dropping the tank - IMO.
The shafts were bare steel from the factory.
You should paint them with something - even clear - unless going for NCRS points.
Here are mine (not correctly restored) http://nhvette.homeunix.com/ftp/in/halfshaft_3.jpg
Make sure you get the bores and grooves cleaned out well: http://nhvette.homeunix.com/ftp/in/halfshaft_4.jpg
I used 600 grit wet/dry with some oil to clean the bores.
Man my shafts dont look half that good but im still working .Would it be
better to leave them on and turn the tires to turn and sand or would (did)you take them off thanks for the quick reply. NH vette
Yellow marker paint is usually indication of a salvage yard part.
...sometimes, but if that was the case than most of my '82 and my 04 Z06/Z16 is from a salvage yard - I think not!
Nice find Wayne . These cars came with all sorts of marks as they rolled down the production line, the new ones still do. I too think it's neat to come across obvious evidence of "human" interaction when the cars were put together.
Gib...you said "Usually" I said "Sometimes"...my point is the guy has been around all of two months and I interpreted your post as indicating that his car had salvage yard parts on it - certainly not something you or I want to discover – just giving him another side to the story.
FWIW I've found yellow and white marks on my cars; yellow specifically on the seat bottoms and seat backs denoting them as pairs.
Sounds like you have a nice stable of cars and I'm sure you're very experienced.
