The top piece comes off first. Start at the ends and loosen it up with a putty knife between the birdcage and the trim from one end to the other. I used a thin, long flat blade screw driver and inserted it in the end of the trim to get the first clip going. If you can get the blade of the screwdriver into the clip you can pry it open and it should release the molding. The trim is held in by several clips mounted to the birdcage. It snaps right in with the clip slots pointing 90 deg. to the windshield. Once you get one end moving move to the other end. Take your time and don't force it because it will bend. The side pieces are attached to the tower trim piece. You need to take out the three screws that hold the trim piece to the tower. They are under the window weather stripping. You will have to re-seal these pieces when you put them back in to keep water out of your cabin.
Use the correct tool. It's called a windshield trim removal tool. Prying with putty knives and screwdrivers can result in broken glass. Start at one end of the trim. Insert the tool between the trim and glass. Feel around with the tool until you feel a clip. Hook the tool behind the clip and pry gently. Lift the trim gently just enough to disengage it from the clip. Work your way to the other end. There will probably be a clip about every 6-8 inches.
Absolutely imperative.
Don't try it without the tool, it would be foolish. Hard to believe you got advice here that stated otherwise.
Mine came off easily using a knife and a screwdriver. At the time I wasn't concerned about braeking the glass because I was going to replace it anyways.....
there are four clips (two left, two right) , one of the previous owners may have glued the entire assembly to fix leaks.... been there done that....
If you don't want to take any chances get a professional to do it for you, if he breaks stuff, he's insured (get that in writing)
I cracked mine trying to get out one of the screws that goes into the chrome corner. It is very easy to crack it if you put any force at all on the edge of the glass.
