Default minor windshield scratches

whats the best way to remove minor scratches on a windshield? Are there commercial products or a "home remedy" that can clean those little scratches up?

Thanx

places like Eastwood, and others, sell a scratch removal kit that is as described by Rich.
It's a compound like substance than you apply and use a buffer wheel on your power drill or buffer tool. you have to be VERY careful though as these products tend to cause distortion in the vision thru the glass afterwards.

Basically they work by the heat of the buffer wheel heating up the glass and the compound rubbing the scratches out, but the heats causes the distortion on the glass so if the scratches are in a location that is in your normal line of vision (typically the windshield wiper coverage area) I probably wouldn't recommend it.
If the scratches are bad enough it might be time to just replace the windshield

Barry is right about being careful...and here is some more info:

The compound used by professionals is Cerium Oxide, and the buffing wheel is a special VERY firm felt, sold for this use only.
However, you can only take out shallow scratches - if you can feel the scratch with your fingernail, it is probably do deep to do much good with. The dangers are of course that you might leave an optical imperfection right in your line of sight.
If you buy a kit for this purpose, follow directions exactly...

Ecklers do a kit, I was looking at it and would like to know how good it is...

As rihwoods said, if the scratch can be felt with your nail, it will be too deep. I have lots of very minor scratches that I would love to polish out....dont want any distortion though

Your best bet is to try Eastwoods Glass Polish. Not a glass grinding compound, but a polish. It will remove haze, and very small surface scratches (with enough elbow grease). It will make your glass crystal clear...but will not remove deeper scratches. Like mentioned above..glass grinding is a roll of the dice. Even the professional auto glass installers/fabricators shy away from it....cause it's that difficult. Three glass places I contacted would not do it for fear of distortion, and they custom cut & install auto glass.
I wouldn't attempt it!

I wonder if any of these will work on a 33 year old sand blasted windshield?
