On a ride yesterday smoke came into passenger compartment pulled over grabbed fire extinguisher and opened hood. Turned out ac hose had a hole and blew the freon onto exhust manifold I hardly ever use the AC , Is it a job to replace hose or should I just forget it
If it were me I would replace the ruptured line. If you remove the line the rubber can be replaced they swedge on a new section of hose. Down here the a/c repair places charge around $35 dollars per hose. I just had my old car hoses replaced and that was the price per hose.
I'd get it fixed unless you want the whole a/c system to turn into a pile of scrap.
FYI: I just picked up a hose assembly off ebay--new--for $75 (+10 ship). High quality fittings, latest Goodyear Galaxy hose material, O-rings already in place.
You don't say what year or BB or SB, which will make a difference in the hose assembly. Go to Dr Rebuild, online or catalog, they have the fittings and lines you need. To replace the R12 you lost, go to Ebay, have your certification certificate ready to purchase R12, you should be good to go......................
I have a 72 and the A/C hose ruptured on the freeway a few years ago. Problem with the hose assembly is that is so close to the exhaust manifold and the heat cooked the hose. Replaced it with a new ACDelco hose assembly but I wrapped the rubber hose near the exhaust manifold with the silver heat insulation material. Most newer cars have this material on the A/C hose assemblies. Although not NCRS acceptable.....do not have to go through that mess again...I hope.
Photovette is telling you straight. Leave that system open to the atmosphere for any length of time and the whole refrigerant system is junk. Even if you don't care now, you may someday.
