Why would you get flamed? Several LS1 conversions around. If you want to get flamed, ask about putting a 6 banger in your vette... to save gas. Maybe a deisel that can burn vegetable oil?
Anyway I just want to know if its way out of my price range to consider this.
I mean if the car is 100% other than the engine it shouldnt cost more than 3,000 to put a new 350 in right?
But I was thinking it would be a lot nicer to put in a 400hp LS1 or 2 or 7.

The only years that offered a 6 (straight) was 53-55...nothing but 8 since then.
There are a ton of options if you want to put a new crate motor in that 76. I'm sure others will chime in who don't have the original powerplant in their rides...my 69 has a ZZ4 crate motor from GM (355 HP/405 Lb.Ft.) and it's runs awesome
Dude, there's no reason for you to be flamed over that question...
Some of the newer motors can actually push out some better horsepower than that of the older motors, and in some cases with better fuel economy than the original stock ones.
As for a 6 banger, yeah...The C3 had V8's available for every year...Big blocks had their last hurrah in '74, but they've been V8's for quite a while.
And I've seen some BIG motors in some C3's...Rihwoods has a 572 in one of his Vettes...

Awesome,
I'd really love to do this.
The 76 im looking at is 5,000 + whatever this motor and install costs.
I hope to do the install with help from friends.
So I guess im just trying to figure out what $$$ I am looking at for an engine.
Mechanics: This is where you are going to get a steal on this car. I am selling this fine car at a huge discount because it possibly needs a motor rebuild and definitely a wiring harness installed. If you are good at three things, you are going to be a happy camper. #1 - Brakes. I had her in storage for a couple of months and when I went to get her, I had to brake all the way to the floor for her to stop. This could be a leaking master cylinder (but it was new) or maybe one of the calipers is leaking (common vette problem). Anyway, not a difficult or too expensive problem to fix. #2 - Electrical. The fuse box melted a couple weeks ago and a wiring harness has been recommended. Are you good at wiring problems? #3 - Motor. Rebuild needed? Just last week, I took the car to a new mechanic (remember, I just moved into a new home in a new area of town). He was too high on his quote. I called a previous mechanic I had used (20 miles away) who quoted me a third of the cost. The new mechanic went nuts once he found out that I was going to take the car to some one else. He cussed me out like a sailor. I truly believed he was high on dope or bipolar! Remember, I did not even know this guy. Once the car arrived at my old mechanic, I understood the unusual reaction from the new mechanic. My old mechanic called me because the car was backfiring (never had done this before). He said the carb jets had been adjusted out to their max to cause flooding. Then he heard a sound like the lifters were loose. (All this from simply pulling it in the garage). He pulled a valve cover and there were fresh metal shavings poured into my motor from my oil spout opening! Evidently, the other mechanic did this when I decided to take my car elsewhere! He also poured metal shavings into my gas tank. It needs cleaning out. I filed a police report. It is my word against his according to the police. Of course I reported him to the BBB also. After all this, I have decided to sell the car as is and move on after such a FRUSTRATING experience. This motor is a Chevy 350. True mileage unknown. It has a brand new Holley Carburetor on it. I had put a new performance cam in it also. It loped real good. Although I do not think it is a matching motor, it is time period appropriate. I refuse to run the motor to reduce any possible damage. The motor ran perfectly fine before this incident. You can rebuild this one or drop another motor in it and sell/rebuild the old motor. Maybe you can salvage this one but my mechanic thinks it is too risky. Maybe you can get lucky and simply clean it all out. See what happens. I am not sure. The transmission is an automatic that was checked and determined to be fine according to my mechanic. Again, no tranny problems before this incident either. No A/C but was an original A/C car. All A/C lines etc... are still present. Well, there you go! The car is a real beauty. She needs some unexpected work just when she was so close to being completed. Hopefully, this is a blessing in disguise for someone out there who loves these cars as much as I do. Good luck bidding.
Why would you get flamed for going fuelie? Most of us down here in C3 are a bunch of crazy hotrodders, anyway, and do odd things like installing Jeep steering boxes to get rid of the crappy stock power steering. You want to see some wild work, just look at Norval and TT...
Please read the add carefully. It needs WAY more than just an engine. "The fuse box melted" would scare me away. Wire harnesses (especially interior/dash) will run you big money (dash $400... forward lamp $200.... engine$175..etc) and the entire braking system will need to be gone over. If your up to the challenge then go for it. Just be aware....

Go For It!
Buy it and have fun doing the upgrades.
Hot Rod, or possibly Popular Hot Rodding, just did a big article on putting LS 2 's into anything, listing all the 'hitches' of these swaps, what pulleys to use water pumps, mounts etc. Maybe someone can point you to that article. I give my mags to friends when I've finished reading them, so I can't go back to check. Could check their web sites . Good luck. Glenn
Beware of the money pit. It needs around $2-3K of work prior to the engine to get working right. It could possibly require more.
Be prepared to spend more than you think it will cost. Also diagnose why the fuse box melted. No sense fixing a car up only to have the fuse box burst into flames-- Burnt Fibreglass smells bad!
The car does look good. The owner at least wants to sound like he is an 'Honest Abe'. Best bet is to personally take a look at the car. Pictures can be deceiving. Something simple a a bad wire can be a nightmare. I get the feeling the owner wants to unload the car not becuase he has a new house, but because if he did the repairs he couldn't recoup the cost.
