Simple question- I want to buy a new '79 steering wheel but dye the leather with the same batch of doeskin that I currently have from corvette america. This batch happens to be darker than the doeskin that I have seen in other cars so I don't want a color mismatch by buying the "correct" color
What would be involved in doing a color change on a steering wheel as far as prep and do you think that the results would be good?
I had this same question with mine. I talked with a leather smith about dying my steering wheel. He advised against it, due to color over color, and the your hands are sweaty while driving and this could cause the first color to bleed thru.

thanks Rob
Why not just talk to Corvette America and have them do the wheel or at least see if they'll sell you enough leather to have a shop do it?
I would if I though that their Doeskin would be the same color. My point is that even Corvette America, I think, has different shades of their own colors. Most of all of the dye is produced by them and sold by others. At least I know that the batch of dye that I have now will match.
I did my '78 Pace Silver with dye. The things noted above have never happened in over two years. I have never had any rub off on my hands, never chipped, etc. It freshened it up and it looks new again. This dye works on almost everything very well.
