I've recently sold my 1962 Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle and gave the helmet to the guy who bought the bike. So, I've got no helmet
But, what I'm wondering from some of you track & AutoCross guys is, what helmet do you have, why and what price to expect to pay. I have my first AutoCross in my Vette this weekend and am a bit curious.
Buy the latest "Snell" approved Motorcycle helmet. For some reason, the're cheaper than the one's sold for automobile use. About $130-$150 at my local speed shop. Get a full-face one.

You need the 1995 Snell or later approved version..I paid $240 for a Bell Magnum..(old style open face)...there are cheaper helmets for around $90 bucks...go to a good motorcycle shop or online...
Depending on what sanctioning body you run with snell 95 are soon to be outdated. Pay the extra get a 2005 S/A you may start in autocross but it led me to high speeds and the S/A are mandatory. Look to the future to get your $$worth.
You can try racers wholesale for a good buy on a Bell or Simpson.

That is a good point about 1995..... Mine is latest...
I think this clears it up for me...If you are running really fast or on a road-course, go for the SA certification. I mentioned the motorcycle helmets because I did low-speed autocross, and the likelyhood of and engine fire was remote. These are the primary differences in motorcycle and automotive helmets:
1. “SA standard requires a flammability test while the M standard does not,
2. SA standard allows narrower visual field than M standard (some SA helmets may not be street legal);
3. SA standard has rollbar impact test while M standard does not.”
A Fromor/Fomor (I forget the exact name) motorcycle helmet will be fine for Autocross. I personally use a Z1R helmet which actually proved to be more protective than any snell approved helmet and is only $90, however I bring 2 helmets with me. An HJC snell approved helmet and the Z1R. They only look at the HJC and I usually wear the Z1R because it's more comfortable.
Here in san diego they require the snell 2000 cert at least.
Our old rule of thumb was "if you have a ten dollar head,where a ten dollar helmet...."
That saying doesn't prove true in accordance to the Z1R helmet. Motorcyclist magazine did a test on a bunch of helmets and actually found that the Z1R helmets, which are ~$90, were the most protective helmet out of the whole pack. See for yourself.
