Default upper trim plate 1968

Does anyone know the difference betweern a 68 and 69 plate? This is the console with the 4spd indicator, cig lighter, heater control. Mine is scratched up and I cannot find anyone that sells a 68. I know the 69 adds the engin data plate but I did not know any other differences such as paint, etc. I assume the screws are the same since the console looks like the same one

68 plate is smooth finish where the black is. 69 on is a pebble grain finish

There is no data plate on a 68. There is a small die cast crossed flags emblem and the fiber optics for Left Tail Lamp, License Plate and Right Tail Lamp.

What's a fair price for a '68 non-air, four speed shift plate? My '68 has a '69 (or later) shift plate in it. Since I don' have the original engine in it I shouldn't care but it still bugs me. (I have a 350 engine from a '70 Z28 Camero.)

TonyQT,
Nice job on the restoration of the shift console plate. Can you tell us exactly the steps you followed and products you used to get that result?
Would like to try it.
Thank you,
Kurt

Which both are the same finish as stated. Smooth vs pebble grain finish

I believe both the shift plate and upper gauge bezel were smooth black finish in 68 (as seen in above picture) 69 on had a pebble grain finish. My guess is to avoid glare and smudges

Can anyone who has restored one of these tell me what you did to get the paint to stick and not pool up on the chrome? Did you have to steel wool the whole thing or something else? I stripped mine got all the paint off and when I tried painting it the paint pooled up bad since it wasnt a sanded surface Im sure. Any tips on anything else having to do with restoring it would be appreciated!

You're spraying too thick of a coat, hence the paint pooling. Several light coats are best.
