fired up my 79 L82 the other day. the fuel gauge is not registering correctly. shows full tank all the time. tank is actually half empty. where should i start? gauge? sending unit? is the sending unit inside the tank? will i have to drop the tank to replace it if that's the problem. thanks for any help you can suggest on how to approach this.
Assuming you've eyeballed all the connections and they look ok, the first thing to do is purchase a volt-meter from Home Depot,..you can get small digital unit for about $20 which will also have an ohm tester and continuity testing as well. Then learn how to use it,..takes about 10 minutes,..money and time well spent.
Then test your guage for 12v. Then the sending unit for conitnuity and ground. If the tank is full the ohm meter should read 90 and empty, you should show 0 oums.

The October issue of Corvette Enthusiast just came out (or about to) and has an article about repairing faulty fuel gauges. It steps you through the process...check it out!
