Side exhaust covers, use/lose them?

Side exhaust covers, use/lose them?
Originals were made out of metal? I was looking through some catalogs and seen fiberglass ones you have to paint for around $300, but wondering how these actually turn out and look. Then I seen the factory replacements going for over $2k 
I can't believe side covers cost as much as the whole dam suspension package I bought.
Seriously considering no covers at all and risk the burns. The covers I have now have bubbling and pitting pretty bad and seem to be plastic or fiberglass.
So what did everyone else do?

Your avatar shows Hooker chrome side exhaust.
My buddy had fiberglass covers painted silver/black.
They looked fine and lasted many many years.
He also had a set of original 69 covers ... never put them on.
Recently he sold them to me cheap (already sold the vette).
Originals are a fiberglass backer/insulator that screws in place of rocker trim.
The 3 metal pieces bolt to the insulators/hangers.
My buddy had fiberglass covers painted silver/black.

If you take a look at my signature, when the 69 rolls by, you'll see the factory side exhaust cover.
That car is a factory side exhaust car. The "4 into 1" collector is too big, and the side exhaust cover wouldn't wrap around it.
Also, the Hookers have a large OD. I don't think the covers would work. Chuck
