Battery Compartment Help

I recently purchased a 79 and I am in the process of restoring. Today I am starting on the electical systems and I have run into a road block from the very start. Bubba had removed the battery from the car and at some point cut the terminals off the cables One cable runs strait down through the bottom of the compartment and one runs back towards the front of the car. I am assuming the one running strait down is the negative but I wanted to make sure. Can anyone tell me if my assumtion is correct

You are correct, the positive cable goes to the starter solinoid.

The one straight down is the ground....it's the easy one to replace!
