Im trying to find a part # in my paragon catalog to replace the speedometer GEAR, but Im not having any luck.
I bought the gear fitting with the O-ring (part #7188k at paragon), but it turns out that wasnt it.
The piece I need is shown on the diagram on page 18, looks like it slides into the gear fitting and is shaped like a screw with gear-teeth on top of it, but I can't for the life of me figure out what it's called or where to buy it.

Go to Ecklers site and type in the search bar speedo gear-what you want is the driven gear-different colors for diff. number of teeth
Why not try your local transmission shop? They probably have a box or two of them sitting around and may even give away one or two if you ask nicely enough! If you are lucky you may run into one of the old timer's that has a clue and could recommend a gear that should work.
For the record, the gear fitting @ ecklers is $13 and @ paragon it's $23. Oops.
To be exact could be tricky-rear ratio-tire size-if you could do what TFI said and ask if you can leave deposit and take a few and return what you dont use would be the best-but if not tell me tire size and rear end and I will look in the book and "try" to recommend one.Maybe if when you call Ecklers they might take your info and come up with one.
There is a website that has a software utility that will tell you how many teeth your driven gear needs to be. I can't remember the name of it but I believe you need the number of teeth on the drive gear (the one inside the tranny that meshes with the plastic one), as well as the rear end ratio.
I'm actually in the process of replacing mine this weekend- going to get the piece from a chevy dealership- they will order and have next day or you can get lucky and they'll have in stock- yeah, that's me...$5 to $11 for what you need-depending on the dealership. And you are saying it right. Hope this helps.
I know I saw it somewhere,my 73 assembly manual has a chart for drive and driven gears. The drive gear(on the output shaft of the trans) should have 8 teeth(manual trans) and the driven gear will vary on the diff. ratio. If you can tell me what rear gear you have,I can tell you what the chart says.
