I got my new set of blower pistons from Keith Black today. That's the good news, the bad news is they are a couple of grams lighter than the old SRP's so the motor will have to be completly re balanced now. Should have known it wouldn't be that easy and cheap . Glenn

The pistons are about 450 grams+/_? I wouldn't think a re-balance is needed, but I could be wrong. 4 grams would only be 1%.

I always thought the "balance" was one piston assembly against the others ... match them exactly.
Am I missing something in this motor ?
What mass gets adjusted to compensate for a lighter piston ??

Glenn, what compression are you looking at with the flat top pistons? Can't wait to hear when you get it back together to enjoy again

The pistons are 8.0 CR. And it's cheaper to rebalance the assembly than add weight to the pistons, and safer. But I wouldn't want to add weight to the pistons. The lighter the assembly, as long as it's strong enough to hold up, the better. Quicker revs! I like fast accelerating motors, or couldn't you guess that already. It's not that big a deal to have the whole thing rebalanced, but it IS yet another additional cost. Don't forget all the new replacement gaskets ( really good head gaskets are NOT cheap for a blower motor, even though it's 'O' ringed, another area I won't cut corners on. Nothing worst than a wild motor with oil leaking from parts!! I can't wait to hear it once again and FEEL that kick in the but when I drop the hammer Glenn

4 g difference KB -vs- SRP??? Don't sweat that one little bit!!!!

And it's far less than a 1% diff too. What you compare against is the BOBWEIGHT ... that equals: ONE Whole rod & its bearings ... PLUS ... ONE Whole piston, pin, spirolox & ringpak ... PLUS ... ONE rod's Big End Only mass & its bearings ... PLUS about 4 grams of clinging oil ... that total is BW for a 90 degree motor (sbc & BBC are).

So ... if the the BW is about 1800g and you got 4g lighter pistons ... difference is on the order of 0.2-0.3% ... insignificant for all but true championship race motors.

I would verify the pistons are weight-matched within the set within 1-2g ... if they're quality pistons they will be.

*edit* if it's a BBC ... the BW probably at least 1900 ... and if only 2g piston diff ... BW diff about 0.1% ... not even peanuts.
