I've got good news and I've got bad news. Good news first. I got my car back from the muffler shop today (it's own post). Bad news. I have a 4" crack in the front bumper. It looks like it comes from a chip in the leading edge. The chip was there when I bought the car. The crack was not.
It looks to me like the crack may have been repaired before and opened up again or at least the bumper was stressed by the impact that caused the ding.
I am planing on repainting the car once I get all the mechanical issues fixed. I will need to rebond the brace the headlights mounts to and was figuring I would replace at least the front bumper. Since that may be a few years, can I repair this in the mean time perferably from the underside.
You cannot get your hand in there to glue fiberglass mat to the underside. If you drill holes at the end of the crack and just fill it with resin it will crack again, the fiberglass is not flexible, the urethane bumper is....... if you're planning on a new paintjob anyways I'd add $500 for two new bumpers
If it's the original urethane, I'd replace it. My front had a crack that I thought was repairable. After researching, learned this wasn't the answer.
So I removed it,..and it crumbled and cracked like a saltine cracker as I worked it off the car. The new one (GM, still in the box) is supple and rubbery.
..and it crumbled and cracked like a saltine cracker.....
Yep - once they start to go, they go. If it's truly some sort of damage, and not underlying rot from age, then it may be repairable. If it's time to go, forget it.
