You should find the last five digits from the windshield post ... contained in the number stamped into the passenger side - front of block - just below the valve cover.

Hey Re,

On the passenger side of the block, all the way forward, just below the head is a pad that the numbers will be stamped on. If the car has A/C it will be partially blocked.

If your looking at a car I bring a flashlight, a thin, long handled flatblade screwdriver and some babywipes. I wipe any grease off the pad with the babywipes on the screwdriver and then lightly scrape the pad with the screwdriver to remove any paint so I can see the numbers.

The first numbers you'll see are the the suffix code, this will let you know it is a Corvette block, base HP and transmission - Man or Auto. The code will be 3 digets and start with a C for a '74; something like CKZ. Another set of numbers will follow, these translate to a block cast date and location.

What you are looking for is the set of numbers below that, it should be a repeat of the VIN, last 6 digits (I believe) of VIN. In short that's "number's matching" of course some folks take it further...the VIN is on the frame, tranny, ect.

Post what you find and we'll help translate.

Pad at the front of the right head will have two stampings; one will be larger characters than the other. Larger of the two will be similar to V0101CKZ. Second will be 1SXxxxxxxxx

Larger number is the engine assembly code and translates:
V Code for Flint Engine Assembly Plant (all Corvette smallblocks were assembled at Flint)
0101 Calendar date engine was assembled (January 01 in example)
CKZ Engine Suffix will identify the specific engine; these letters will vary depending upon the engine.

Smaller number translates:
1 Corvette
S St. Louis plant code
X Year of manufacture
xxx consecutive unit number. Should match VIN on windshield post.

Good luck.

Thanks guys. Not buying. Selling. I had an engine that was given to me with the car and the buyer wanted to know if it was the original engine. It was.

Thanx
