Good news is my wife agreed to let me do the transmission this winter. I am planning on going with the kits from Keisler (probably just the 5spd but maybe one of the 6 spds).
Anyone have any god articles, write-ups or other good stuff for me to start reading up on now?
Thanks
Shane
I guess it just goes to show what ever you have ,you want the other.I have a manual in mine, and i am tired of shifting gears, now i want a auto, besides autos are faster ,shift faster, stall, overdrives, and easier on the rear and universals.I wish you the best with your manual
Might be a dumb question but are there any other automatic trans that can be fitted other then the standard three speed auto? I just bought a 74 and it seems between 65 and 115 mph there aught to be a 4th gear?
Maybe I am just to used to modern day drive trains with overdrive.

Watcha got? Wanna swap??

Any idea how much harder this is to do without removing the engine?

I installed the TKO 600 in my 79 that had the 700R4. I installed the tranny to the installed motor.
Well built gear banging auto trannys are terrifically hard on the drive line. The only reason that I went to a 5 speed was first to gain about 25 HP over a auto tranny and have better control of what the motor was doing. I was always manually shifting my 700R4. The gear spreads were all wrong. 90 mph in second and about 140 mph in third and then you could shift into OD. I now have 4 gears well spaced to 140 mph.
auto trannies are also a tire smoker. Once you go up in power the additional TQ multiplier function of the torq converter works against you. If i tried hard enough i could do a full 1/8 th mile drag strip burn out with 315/35/17 tires. With a 5 speed the car hooks and goes.

All you say is mostly true, you can get different gearing in autos,But for me i am just plain tired of shifting,i hate stop and start traffic, ide like to drink a coke while i drive, ide like to have my hands free.my leg gets tire of clutching,i want to be comfortable. It use to be manuals were always faster then autos, but todays tech ,its not true anymore.Autos have come a long way.And the trans i have is the richmond super t10 race trans,1 through 3 are higher gears and 4th is 1 to 1.
It would take a a full race clutchless shifting manual tranny to beat the speed of a race shift kitted auto tranny in how fast it shifts gears.
I would put my 700 in second which would allow it to do a auto shift 1-2. If you had the gas on the floor you would never even hear of feel the tranny shift, but you know that it had because the speedo would be reading 90 mph and the motor would be into the rev limiter and you have not even moved 10 feet out into the intersection
Wow. Was just asking for input...Did not mean to start an all out war!
Personally, I miss banging through the gears, the ability to control and downshift and I want that back. Like everything else with these cars, to each his own.

Not to mention that auto installs are half the price for even durability
Going from manual to auto is easy. Going from auto to manual is a lot more work. The mounts aren't bad, but putting in the clutch and associate linkage can be a real treat. I would put in a TH700R4 for the reasons mentioned above. I also have a Jeep I mess around with so read their mags as well, and they tend to destroy stuff differentials, transmissions, etc. Think about wheeling it and going from full throttle to dead stop or the other way depending on terrain - much more punishment than anything you can do on the pavement. The top three transmissions are the TH400, 350, and then the 700R4. The first two are a bit more durable, but the R4 has better fuel economy.
