Fuel tank was dropped today for maybe (it looked like) first time in 37 years. Guess what I found? Nothing but that blob of glue in the center of the picture, where my build sheet used to be.
Sorry, but all too typical. Most of our tanks look exactly like yours because most of us find nothing when we get there, or what little we do find is illegible.
The lucky ones are those who actually find a sticker and can read it.
Decided to go ahead and do body off. So I'm pulling everything possible off before doing so. Plus I was anxious to find that elusive build sheet.
No, it wasn't too hard. Had to remove exhaust and spare tire tub top & bottom. Then it's just 2 fuel hoses (supply & return), 2 wires, 2 rusty strap bolts & 4 rusty support bolts. Drop the support member, pull the straps, tilt the tank, and it comes right out.
Don't forget to remove fuel first, have a fire extinguisher handy (points from Bob Onit? ) and wear safety glasses 'cause the dirt & dust that falls is amazing!
I found a couple of slackers hanging around the house to help.
I pulled the body off of a '76, the build sheet was there with about 1/8" of dust on it. After ever-so-gently brushing off the dust with a piece of cheese cloth, i was left with a crispy, crunchy, blank piece of yellowed paper.
I am in the same situation. I dropped my tank today and find tiny scraps at the corners of the build sheet - enough to prove it was there but no info. Did you get an answer to your questions about copies at the Vette museum?
Yes. But they weren't good answers. Apparently if your car was pre '77 built at St. Louis, good luck. If it was 77-81 there is a company called Allied Vaughn that was hired to put records on microfiche. And the NCM is supposed to have MOST of the 81 and after (Bowling Green Plant) records. I must credit this wealth of knowledge to Easy Mike who sent it to me. He also sent me this link. Good Luck.

it is a bummer, but oh well, at least you enjoyed the company of your helpers....I don't have my build sheet either, but hey, the build sheet doesn't drive the car so I don't care! the enjoyment is in the driving.
