I accidentally posted this over in the technical forum, so I guess I'll post here now:
I've looked at a couple C3's....and as far as I can remember all of them had kind of a 'mess' on the very top of the peice that mounts the hinges. Looks like someone did some very poor bodywork there or something, only in the very upper inch or so of that peice. I am just wondering if this is normal(where they finish the fiberglass) or if it's a sign of something else. I find it hard to believe that all these owners have done the same poor body work there, but anything is possible. How does your hinge area look?(if you haven't redone it yourself already)
It's probably normal. The fenders bond at this area. Assembly line workers were supposed to smooth out any extra bonding agent in this area for appearance purposes, but the quality of the "smoothing" varied depending upon who did it. There was also no finish sanding in this area before the exterior color was shot.
It's normal to see what appear to be cracks in this area, since the bonding agent dries and shrinks a little with age.
My 73 has all of the original body panels and when I painted the car last year, that area was also a mess. That is the way it was from the factory. I cleaned mine up some as I do not care about having it judged for NCRS. If you are going to have it judged, leave it as it is. NCRS will deduct points for over restoring. Depends on which route you want to go. Mine is a driver and so I did some sanding and smoothing before I painted the car.
