does anybody sell an inexpensive but durable tool chest? i went in to Sears the other day and just about fainted. if i bought a couple of craftsman tool chests it would cost me more than my vette did!!! and that would be before i put tools in it!!! around a thousand dollars for a box with drawers!?!?! who are they selling these to, the government??
i don't need the mother of all tool chests, just something to keep my tools organized in?
I went the cheapo route and bought two Stanley toolchests from Wal-Mart. They sit about 4 feet high and are on rollers and have lots of drawers for smaller tools and a few bigger drawers for the big stuff. They were about $100 each and even came with some Stanley tools. I will eventually get the refrigerator size mac tools chest, but those are well over $1000. For me the two toolchests work perfect for the time being.
A tool box holding what will end up being several K$$ in tools needs to be pretty good quality. If it gets moved around much with all the weight in them the cheap ones will break. The drawer hardware makes a big difference too, nuthin will **** ya off more than working on something stubborn and then havin a tool drawer stick or fall out.
I have a set of 2 Kennedy boxes I got way cheap at an auction several yrs ago, but am looking to upgrade someday, the stainless unit at sams or something like it maybe.
My .02
I have this Craftsman combo ... pretty decent setup for the money.
On clearance for under $200 !!! I think I paid $280 a couple years back.
I keep the roller base and top unit together, while the intermediate
chest is sitting on a workbench.
Similar to Barry's, but drawer slides not roller drawer slides.
I've had no issues with mine.
I have seen several really nice sets at pawn shops for REALLY cheap! Both used tools and tool boxes are what they are - no need to worry about previous life abuse because you'll see it!
Sears has a sale right now but NOTHING is in stock for "store pickup", checked three stores in my area....They charge oversize delivery fee which is around $40 per item
STOP BUYING AT THOSE UNION BUSTING WALLEY MARTS AND SON OF SAM CLUBS!!! Go to Sears!Anyone who owns a C3 and don't believe in union labor should sell it! Unions built this country and made working conditions for all workers in this country so SCREW WALLEY MART. Good luck finding a U S made tool bos.

I like my local independent Sears hardware store. The owner will even look at future specials for when the best price will be offered. I can't stand Sears / K-Mart corporate, but my local independent store is A-OK.
All I have is a hammer and a vice grip. I just stack them by the duct tape and wire in the corner...
lol. a recent episode of "Payback" featured Jay Leno who was giving a new Z06 corvette (with appropriate customization for the new owner, probably 100K plus when Leno got through with it) to an old friend who helped him get started in the stand up comedy business. one of the lines from the episode i remember is when Leno says, "the great thing is, it may be a corvette but its still a chevy. that means you can fix it with a hammer".

Let me see....A $800 stainless steel box from Sams or a similar sized box union-made for $3,500...which one to buy...hmmmm
