I'm restoring a 1975 corvette coupe and I want to remove the doors. What is the right way to remove them, so when I install them they are still pretty much aligned? Is there any special tools needed? I also have power windows in these doors.
I've seen (street rod/hot-rod)guys drill a coupla holes on the hinge and put a sheetmetal screw there so when the part is re-installed it is closer to being aligned properly, the only limiting factor would be the room you actually have to drill the hole. Good Luck,,,,
Peace,,, Moosie
When I took the doors off of my 77 they were actually easier than I thought to remove. Of course you have to remove the door panel and if budda has not been in there there is a plate to remove to access the hinge mounting point on the door. I wasnt worried about alignment because I am restoring mine but you can use one of those black sharpie fine tip pens and put a circle around all the bolts to locate original position. As far as the power window wiring. There is a connector on the window motor just unplug it and take a screwdriver and pop loose the rubber grommet on the front of the door and feed the wiring out of the hole. I used my floor jack with a towel on the pad to support the door while I unbolted it and when the bolts were removed I just slid the jack and door away from the car. It was real easy to remove the door. Hope this helps. Good luck.
Go slowly. These doors weigh about fifty pounds more than they ought to. You will want something to help support it. I used my floor jack. Be mindful of potentially sharp edges around the various holes stamped in the door. You can ruin a finger on one of those.
I am also getting ready to restore my 71 and intend to use an engine hoist and wrap a tow strap around the door. I figure to raise the hoist enough to just put a slight tension on the strap and then back it off a bit so I don't bind the hinge. I am going to make a wood dolly to set the doors and hood on. That way they will be easy to move and out of harms way.
