Hello Fellow Vetteheads,
Replacing my carburetor and am asking for some help on getting
a proper replacement. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks to all in Advance
I am running a basically stock 350 and an edelbrock performer 600. Once I finally got it tuned it is working OK, but I would take Lars advice and stick with a Q-jet or Holley. When I bought my carb I was looking to save a few cents.
Looking at your car it looks like it is all stock. The Q Jet is hard to beat for that application. A good rebuild on your carb should bring it back to running like new.
It is all stock, I had a weep hole in the bottom of the body that
was brazed and had it rebuilt a couple of years ago, but the other
day, (I do not drive it alot) I was going to pass and punched it,
however there was no snap at all. It seemed like the secondary's
did not kick in. I realize the L82 is not exactly a power house like
so many of it's predecessors and newer sisters and brothers, but
gee wizz something should happen.Do not know what size the carb
is but it is the original someone I'am sure knows what that would be.
I'am a halffast mechanic sort of and can do certain things, but need
help here. Thank you All in Advance.
Only my personal experience, as I know bunches of listers swear by the Qjets...but I went through 2 rebuilt Qjets on my stock intake and never got any performance... put a Edlebrock 600 Qjet replacement, the car started immediately and ran very, very smooth from the minute I installed it.
just this weekend I replaced the heads and added a Edelbrock performer intake and the sucker screams now.

Sounds more like a timing issue than a carb issue.
Please excuse my ignorance here but confusion is setting in.
Gordonm by the looks of your credentials I would be remiss if
I were to doubt you, and Timbo2 you put an Edelbrock 600cfm
on and it ran well, however there is a huge difference between a
750 and a 600 is there not?
Also, a Q-Jet is basically a variable CFM crab. The secondary air valve only opens when the engine needs it. So, if you punch it at 1500 rpm, the secondaries will probably not open quickly and it won't feel like a kick in the pants. Punch it at 3000 rpm and they will open right up and you'll feel it.

Were they rebuilt by a reputible shop or were they commercially rebuilt units you purchased from an aoto parts store or catalog ect:?
Theres a huge difference between professionally and commercially rebuilt
IMO, A properly tuned QJ is the best carb for any engine that requires up to 850 CFM.
Very reliable as well

Mine were rebuilt by Holley...which would probably explain the issues I had... I have not doubts that Qjets are great carbs when they're rebuilt/setup correctly... Alot of ya'll that are a heck of alot more savvy than me attest to that. If I had a local shop that I could trust to rebuild the Qjets I've had, I would have went that direction...I've just been burned so many times by so-called local "experts", that I went the Edelbrock direction...

Commercially rebuilt q-jets =
If you can find an unmolested Edelbrock reproduction q-jet (#190x) they're an excellent place to start. I have a 1904 and after I got the correct sized metering rods it runs beautifully.
For what it's worth: I replaced my engine this summer and put my old Holley 4150 back on and kept the Q Jet aside. After weeks of smoking and backfiring I put the QJet on and the engine came to life. BTW I have a Holley 4150 carb with electric choke for sale.
