Default Car amplifier question

Greetings all,

Here is the situation, my car does not have a stereo currently (previous owner cut the console for a sweet 8-track player) and I have since machined a cover and put switches and gauges in its place.

Does anyone know if you can run a signal for an MP3 player straight into a car amplifier (into low power RCA jacks) and drive the speakers from that?

Any help is appreciated.

Very good question. I would think that someone in the car stereo section would be able to help you with this one if it is possible to do.

Thanks, I suppose I should venture out of the C3 area once and a while.

I think that the guys in the C3 section are the best on the board. I would have done the same thing you did and post here, but I would also give it a shot over there too. Hopefully someone will chime in here that can point you in the right direction.

You could buy a connector that a headphone jack wire tat will plug in to with rca outs. I would go look at a place like radioshack and see what they have. I believe its called something like a Y-connector. You'll need to get a headphone jack (plug in your mp3 player) to headphone jack wire (to plug into the Y-connector). You will have to go through multiple connector wires but you could do it.

yes. the amp doesn't know where the signal comes from. You can connect anything to it. TV, dvd, whatever. Like stated before, Radio Shack will have the necessary cables.

RadioShack? You can get what you need at Wal-Mart or Target. It's just a standard miniplug to RCA y-adapter, and a miniplug to miniplug cable to connect the MP3 player to the y-adapter.

I don't see why it cannot be done. The head unit is just another form of amplifier.

True, no need in paying more than you have to.

Do a search, the issue has come up before.... and as I have repied in previous threads, you can do it, but I wouldnt.

Yes, it will work, but not very well. You need a pre-amplifier inbetween the two. If you do just hook the ipod up to the amp, you'll be using probably 10-20% of the amplifiers potential.
