hey guys finally got the vette home today and wanted to ask u my next ? as im sure there will be many,i discovered today that since mine is a 1975 it only has 13 digits on the vin and thats ok,but mine starts with (fla) and not numbers, where can i go to get that vin checked and the history? thnx bb
You can find for yourself about your car by the infomation below and the vehicle's VIN #
The first number is the division of General Motors that produced the vehicle. 1=Chevrolet. The second position is a letter for the vehicle series:Z=Corvette. The third and fourth positions are the body style. A convertible is 67 and a coupe is 37. The fifth position denotes the engine installed in the vehicle. In 1975, J is for the base engine (L48) at 165 horsepower; T is for the L82 at 205 horsepower. The sixth position is the last digit of the model year. The seventh position is for the assembly plant:S=Saint Louis The eighth position or last five positions represent the sequential number of the vehicle.
If you want more infomation on your VIN tag you would have to do a VIN history search. The main auto search goes back only to 1980 model cars I believe so you may have to contact the state's Title division.
yeah i believe it is a state code cause it starts with fla, which is where i`am florida, and i got ahold of the owner tonite and he said the original was lost, but i would still like to do a check on it to find out color codes and engine and so on, any links that would get me that info would be appreciated? all the ones ive found so far dont decode back past 1981 any ideas? thnx bb
When the VIN# starts with the 1st 3 letters of the state, it will be a Previous Salvage Title. This means it was sold through an insurance salvage pool after an insurance claim had paid the car off and it was surrendered to the insurance company as a write off. It could have been from a wreck or a theft recover.
ok, the original vin would only show the engine and whether is was a coupe or convertible. you can XXXXX the last 5 numbers and post the vin and it might have the same format as the original. the color code was on a metal tag riveted to the front driver's door jamb.
ok the vin is 13 digits and they r....FLA5s415xxxxx any more help is appreciated, and thnx guys like i said we just got it so im sure ill need more help along the way. bb

well, the original vin would have been 1Z37J5S415XXX so it looks like they used some of the original. The 5 would be the year for 75, the S is for St Louis Assembly where the car was built, the 4 is a constant, and 15XXX is the car's sequence number, the 15,XXXth 75 Corvette built. that's about all you can tell from the vin, did you find the trim tag?

Not necessarily. There are any number of reasons a state might issue a new VIN to a car that don't involve salvage.
VIN plate fell off for some reason is the main one. Damage to that area, rust, etc could all cause that to happen. Most if not all states have a process to verify ownership and issue a new VIN. I've heard that some states issue new serial numbers for older vehicles as a matter of course, I don't know why.
