Steering Wheel replacement

I have just remove the steering wheel from my 76 Vette in order to see why the outer of my ignition lock was spinning, but could not get to it as i could see no way to pull up the indicator pieces with the wires attached, any ideas would be gratefully recieved, but more importantly how the hell do you compress the center spring and re-insert the 'C' clip, in the manual it says use a compressor, but what type and where do you attache it ?.

I'm confused please help !!!

There is a 'special" tool you need to compress the spring so you can remove the clip. Most autoparts stores sell them. Fits most all GM cars. Only cost 10-15 bucks.
