Default My L-88 headlight project

This is my official L-88 headlight project thread. I'll try to update my progress as I go along. So far I have made a template from poster board. I fitted that to the headlight area. Then made a thin gauge aluminum template from the poster board template and mocked it up in the headlight housing. I have attached some pictures to show my progress. My next step will be to get some stainless steel or heavy guage aluminum to make the final buckets.

Thanks to lvrpool for the inspiration and Star79 for his template and buckets pictures!

Default *Update*

Ok, I went to my local sheet metal shop and picked up a sheet of .40 gauge aluminum. I was able to get both buckets out of it with plenty to spare. Below are the pics of my progress. I'm going to drill the bolt holes and cut out the hole for the wires tomorrow.

First pic is of the template on the aluminum

Second pic is of the cut out aluminum

Third pic is of the bucket bent together

Thanks Lvrpool! Do you have a template of the fastener bases you made for your dzus fasteners?

You'll be much happier you used aluminum instead of stainless. My SS ones were a bi*** to cut/bend/drill/paint.

Yeah the .40 aluminum was not that hard to bend at all. Here is one more pic on my progress.

This is the left side with the holes punched out for the back of the headlight to go through, and primered black.

Default *Finished product*

Ok, here is the finished product. Total cost of project, including aluminum, bolts, key hole saw, metal shears....... $60 (the elbow grease was free). Compared to $300 if purchased from Guldstrand. So I saved $240!!!

This is the template I used, courtesy of Star79. The 2 measurements on the top left on the duct tape are 5 1/2" on the left and 4 1/2" on the right. I also did not make the cutouts at the bottom either. Each person will have to make their own tweeks to it depending on how they mount it.

See, told ya you could do it. Plus you could probably sell your old (hideous) square headlights and buckets for more than a hundred on eBay.

Heres the one I have. I think it's wrong unless they two years are different. I already made them out of cardboard.

Edit maybe not. They seem similar after measuring ym card board ones.

Those call for 6.375 wide instead of 6.5. I think that is the problem. And what do the top tabs mount to? The ones bent of the head light mounts? Also what holds up the front up the bucket?

I have holes in my rear tabs that correspond to the original mounting holes (on the header bar) for the pop-up light bracket. For the front I drilled three small holes, it's just screwed to the metal thing up there that the bumper is sort of attached to. Dunno if a Yellow 73 is much different.

It also seems my diagram the lights are more offset. I haven't even looked at how the head loghts mount or anything. The stock ones are still there.
