It is an automatic.... I would prefer to pull them as a unit... Less work! I just need to know that everything clears on the way out. Once it's on the way out it's hard to go back...
For a manual trans, it's much easier to put the engine/trans back together out side the car, then install as a complete unit. Installs easily. No experience with a auto.
Pull and install as a unit - but have one of those nifty leveling devices on your engine hoist - otherwise it is a royal pain in the buttocks.
If you dont have a leveller and you cannot rent or otherwise buy one, then I would suggest doing them seperate.
I've had the engine/trans combo in and out of my 78 more times than i care to admit...i always pull them together...the tremec I run now is as long as the th350 easily and i had no problems. (remember to keep the slip yoke in the tailshaft and zip tie a plastic bag over the end as well)... or you will dump ATF all over the place.
Remove/Install both together as a unit. I think this is easiest. Make sure to use a leveller and have the car jacked up pretty high on stands so there is room underneath to swing the tranny in...

Pulled mine as a unit. DONT FORGET TO TAKE THE HOOD OFF!!!
Went back as a unit, although it was a body off, so no issues there!
I'm going to be doing this soon as well...My dad seems to think that the shifter on our manual tranny doesn't need to be removed before we pull it. Anyone know if this is true?
I really don't want to damage it if I can help it.

You will need to disconnect and remove the linkage, but the shift mechanism and lever can remain installed (if it is a stock setup). It is bolted to the crossmember.

Nah, it's not a stock shifter, it's a Hurst aftermarket that was installed before I ever got the car.
I'm probably going to look into removing it before the tranny gets pulled, then, because it looks like there's some damage to the console area already.
I'll try to keep everyone abreast for when I get done pulling it...
The following is what I learned when I pulled/installed the 350 in my 73 4spd Corvette. Remove/install engine and tranny as a unit. Leave the Hurst shifter and all linkage attached (no shifter of course). This made it much easier to adjust the shifter linkage. Did not use a engine leveler to install, used a lift plate attached to intake with lift hook in rear most hole of lift plate. Car was not on jack stands. My son and I dropped the whole engine/tranny/shifter linkage in less than 15 minutes. Of course it took another 4 hours to hook-up everything else. YMMV
