I am putting a new cam and lifters, springs, etc. in my '78 L-48. I marked the distributor, took off the intake ,timing gear cover, rockers and pushrods and lifters. I then realized that before pulling my old cam out the motor should be on #1 plug TDC. I put the dist. and damper pulley back in and turned the motor over by hand trying to achieve TDC on #1 plug. I turned and turned and it never lands on #1. Any help out there for a rusty mechanic trying to remember from 25 years ago? Thanks in advance!!
I don't think you need to be at TDC on #1. You need to have the two timing marks on the sprockets line up.
I've always found turning the engine some when installing the chain made life easier, as long as the two marks aligned. So it is a good idea to remove all the plugs.
You are installing a new chain and sprockets, right?
Yes, a new gear and chain too. As long as my marks line up it doesn't matter where the motor is at? And how about putting the distributor back in since I'm not sure if it's in the right position now or not. Thanks a bunch Terry 1955
It`s really very simple. If the dots are together, it`s firing on 6, not 1. Just set the distributor in with the rotor facing or pointing to the #6 plug wire in the cap.
