Hello all, I just found this forum and it couldn't have come at a better time. I have a 76 and I recently started to show it at some local car shows. I wanted to remove the engine so that i can detail it and my engine compartment, and to do some needed upgrades. I was wondering, do I just remove the engine , or can I remove the engine and tranny in one shot.? If so where can i find info on the proper procedure.?
From: GA "When I grow up, I'm gonna get a Trans Am and run from the cops". Direct quote from my 4yo son.
You will hear both sides of the coin here as to what to do, but I took my engine out without the trans and didn't even have to remove the fan shroud. The hood has to come off and you will want to approach the engine from the side with the cherry picker. Remove the front wheels and you have access to either side. If your trans is fine, I see no need to remove it. It's not that hard to realign everything. Just my .02
Since your is an auto you can pull it by itself just like camfrk said. Remove the fan, water pump, ac compressor, alt, ps pump, and lower pulleys off the front of the engine. The shroud can stay in place. You can use a standard engine hoist to go in sideways. If you pull the exhaust manifolds with the engine in the car you will have easier access to the motor mounts, starter wiring, ps pump, etc and it won't be so tight when lifting the engine. Be careful around the AC evaporator case. It breaks very easily. Also pull the distributor to get to the top trans bolts. If you have any questions give me a shout and I'll walk you right thru it.
