I have been told that timing is good as long as your motor does not ping. I don't think I've heard a motor ping. How do you tell and how does it sound?

THANKS!
Well........ to put it bluntly
It sounds like two skeletons making love on a tin roof
My vette does not ping but my Road king does (10.5 compression) when I buy gas in the country side. If I get on the gas with out shifting down it pings and bucks. There is no controls on the gas stations out side of the city so the station owners dilute the gas to make extra cash. I usually carry some STP octane buster with me when I ride the Harley in the Country side.

It sounds like marbles being pushed together or shaken in a bag. The higher the compression and the hotter the motor runs the more likely you are to experience it. The fix is to retard the timing to the point where you eliminate the pinging.
