At Last...Progress
Finally got them back from the thermal coating process. Looks great. Also had the side skirts coated while I was at it. What do ya think?
They left this afternoon for the machine shop to be balanced. If all goes smoothly (hasn't yet but I can hope) should start to go back together later this month. I'll keep ya posted. Glenn
? the coating is dry film lubricant...if you scratch it, it won't wear the cyl wall, it'll be just like a normal piston surface
When I bought my coated pistons, the first thing they said was be careful of the coating. If it gets scratched it will start to scratch at the cyl surface, creating premature wear marks.
that must be a very hard coating then, dang! I've never used these coatings before, I had thougfht about doing some of the swain tech coatings but I never trusted the DIY stuff and having it done is $$$$
Kinda weird, it's hard enough to mess up the cyl. wall when scratched..yet you have to be careful not to scratch it?
You see more and more of these coatings being used...maybe someday.

He may have been full of crap, but unless I know for sure otherwise I'm gonna do my best to do it safe and clean.

A local company just down the road. Total cost $220.00. I'm praying the machine shop is as careful as I would be. Will inspect them VERY carefully before they go back in. Thanks for the extra warning! I sure don't want to do this YET again! Couse with my track history, wear isn't a problem on anything. Nothing stay in long enough to wear! Glenn

OK, I'll ask...Whats the coating for? My KB Pistons in the Harley are teflon coated on the skirts and I know thats for less cylindar friction., So what is this stuff and what does it do for you?
Thanks

Well maybe the planets are lining up for you this time, it seems like you could use a run of good luck ,motor wise, hang in there, it'll get better,,,Peace,,,Moosie

All the coatings do is reduce friction plain and simple. There are several different kinds of coatings, but in the end they all do the same thing. Some are better suited for racing and some are better suited for street applications. The oil and the coating just work together to make the piston slide up and down with as little friction as possible.
looks great~!! i am hoping that it is a reflection or something in the first picture... but it looks like the coating got a little scratched already?? the lower left?
