We just got a 68 convertible and we are trying to figure out how to restore the steering wheel. It appears to be wood, but could be resin. Does anyone know a good and safe way to restore this in either case?
If it is original, then it is genuine virgin plastic! (Simulated wood) What does it look like? I don't know what you could do to restore a plastic wheel that is showing wear.
Thanks Guys
That thing looks alot like wood.I was thinking just a lite sanding, then shoot on some clear....but was worried that the fake wood grain would sand off.....or clear might react with the plastic.
Only one way to find out...I will post results.
Several months ago the NCRS monthly magazine had an article about how to restore 68 plastic steering wheels. You should try to read this article. Also, if you search around, there are people who advertise retoration of your steering wheel.
NCRS = National Corvette Restoration Society. Try NCRS.org
Also try Hemming's Motor News as there are ads in there for steering wheel restoration.
Might be cheaper to just buy another one in better condition at a swap meet.

The wheel is not bad.
I pulled it to take to my brothers, thinking it might be wooden.
He is a master woodworker....and the wheel has two small cracks where the spokes meet the rim.
And the finish looks worn and dirty.
I like fixing everything myself....
I would rather have the wheel that came with the car with a few problems than a perfect new one...
If anyone has a copy of any of the repair how to,s
I would love to read them....
I looked on NCRS and didnt find the info...but dont know my way around their site.
One way or the other I will fix it.
