Default winter questions

Hi Guys,

What's the cut-off point before you put your Vette into winter storage? I.e. How low does the temperature have to be before the body will probably start to crack if driven? Finally, during the cold is it ok to have the car shipped to another part of the country or a C3 really shouldn't be driven nor shipped during the cold?

Thanks for your help!

I have seen many Corvettes driven in the snow here in New England.
I was unaware that they would crack if exposed to cold or snow. They are, after all, cars. Back in the 70s, I drove my 68 in the winter while my winter car was in the shop. I still have the same 68 and no cracks anywhere. I don't think they are quite as fragile as you think.

And add that snow, salt and ice are the only reason I wouldn't drive mine year around. Well and more stupid drivers durning the colder months too.

I have been driving C3's since back in the 70's when they were still new cars. Everyone always drove them year round. I have never heard of them cracking due to cold weather. Now, a rubber bumper will be more prone to crack if it is very cold, say below 20 degrees F. for a long period of time, but that would only happen if it were bumped hard.

Put it away for the winter? No Way! If the sun is out & no salt on the roads - I'll take a nice winter ride. Too cold to get the T-tops off but still great to get out on the road.

Thanks guys. Someone had told me that the fiberglass gets brittle in the cold and becomes more prone to cracking. I guess that's not the case... People put their vettes in storage to avoid the snow and ice. In that case taking it for a ride on a dry cold (i'm talking New England cold) day is fine, as it shipping it, right?

Cold doesn't affect fiberglass....as far as driving during the winter I do untill the first salt is put down...then not again untill the spring rains wash it away.

Mine usually hibernates in November, but only because I start some project or another that takes until February. I'd rather have it apart in the rainy months than the sunny ones.

I don't drive my vette in the winter to avoid salt and slush. I put it in storage in late November for 3-4 months to free up garage space for another car.

The only reason I would not drive mine in the winter here is that the A/C is broken..........
