Bubba car stands!!
Had this "bubba" idea of making some car stands by taking some old steel wheels, stacking 2 maybe 3 wheels and then weld the outer edges of the rim to make some car stands. Then raise the car and let the cars tires rest on the wheel/stands.
Seems like it would be more solid and safer than conventional jack stands. Just never really trusted jack stands. Anyway two 8" wide wheels would raise the car about 12" and three 8" wheels would be about 18"....I know this will get some posts and comments... Mark
I built a complete Baja Bug once on two saw horses, starting with the floor pan, adding body, tranny, then engine, wheels etc..So your idea using steel wheels will work just fine..
I'm sure they will be just fine, but they will take up alot more room in your garage when not being used. And how are you going to do a brake job or change a tire with this setup?
My favorite junk yard does that. One old steel wheel flat as a base, another welded to it at a 90* angle as the support. They're clunky, but you can't knock them over.

lol yeah my local wrecking yard does that too, definately works and would definately give the sickly feel of bubbarization.
My wrecking yard also does this, and I always wondered what kind of liability issue's they might run into because of it's being a "pull it yourself" yard. I wouldnt crawl under anything held up like that until I tried like hell to move the vehicle. I couldnt budge'em with my best efforts.

Oh I have a quite few conventional jack stands, floor jacks, ramps etc. It just seems that when you get the car 16-20" high on regular stands. The car is not high enough to remove an automatic tranny and I am feel uneasy about getting under there....like I said a "bubba project".....
Ok if you want to go truly bubbarized, weld two rims on top of each other as you mentioned and weld the third in the normal upright position sitting on the other two.
Then just jack up the car, take off the front wheels and bolt on your new 'stands', now that definately won't move!

OK calling all Bubbas...(if you have any old car you have to have a little Bubba in you)...anyway ....still trying to figure out how to get the car saftely in the air , 24 inches or so...other than get a lift.
Hence the the welded stacked wheels idea. I may just break down and buy a car lift. thanks for al the comments
Mark
It should be fine, in a body shop I worked at we made car dollies this way, we would take a piece of 1/4 plate, bolt casters to it, and weld a wheel to the top of it, and sit the tires of the vehicle into the wheel we welded to the plate, worked great and gave a good amount of clearance under the car.

Great idea....I have the car dollies in my collection of car handling equipment...
Hey man. Bubba or not, that sounds like a good idea. I've been trying to figure something out to avoid having to buy a lift for several months now. I may give your idea a try.
just breakout the concrete and dig a hole under the vette......
no welder needed..... just a big hammer and a shovel and some moonshine
You're probably kidding, but there is an old man here who runs an inspection shop from his home who did that. He shut down his shop in town, and they told him he couldnt have a lift in his garage(for commercial tax reasons) so he dug a hole in his garage floor with centerblock steps and sidewalls. He said Skru'em!
i used to do plumbing work for a guy that had his garage built so that he could park his rolls and walk down under it to work on it...thats cool
Pits are nice for oil chamges etc...but you really cant get to things like brake lines or anything to the side of the car. Or detailing the underside...etc. Not to mention taking the wheels off for anything.
A lift is really the only way to go. I am still trying to figure out what lift to buy. I want a decent Asymmetric lift.
Anyone know much about lifts? I was going to start a thread once I got serious...but I have been looking at this. Hydraulics are US made but the lift itself is not?
hmmm...
