Okay, so I need to replace my wiper door canister on my 72 and will be ordering a new one very soon - the wiper door shuts fine but takes a long time to open, if it does at all. In the meantime, I plan on manually opening the wiper door when I need it - the problem is that the door shuts as soon as I turn off the wipers. How can I prevent this? Using the **** under the steering column didn't help this specific situation - can I just disconnect and plug the vacuum line?

While you are waiting to replace the cannister.....disconnect both vacuum lines from the cannister (front and rear).....plug the lines.
Now you can open and close the door by hand....it will stay where you put it. Those cans are easy to rebuild....just order the rubber parts...clean and paint the can or just shine it up.
Good luck.....

Are you using the correct "****"?
The large round **** (whihc turns) stops the wipers on the windshield so you can change them.
The other two switches on each side of the round **** keep the wiper door or the headlight doors in the open position depending on which one of the two switches you pull straight down.

One more thing. I noticed that you said it works fine in one direction. That tells me that the inner diaphram is good and ONE of the rubber endcaps are bad. I bet you just need to order new rubber caps for both ends. Clean it up ...should work fine.

Well, the thing is, we switched around the lines on the canister to test it, and the door always closed fine no matter which vacuum port it was connected to...

Do both lines have good vacuum going to the canister?
