made a rare appearance at an Autozone today. saw a "UV leak detection system" on a shelf there. consisted of UV flashlight, goggles and UV dye. didn't get to read the particulars. what are these used for. engine, gasket leaks?? or A/C leaks? how do they work. anybody use them or like them?
Used for a/c leaks. They work great if you have a way to put the dye in the system. The one I have in my shop is a high dollar unit so i'm not sure about the autozone one.
I had a high-dollar one in my shop, the AutoZone unit beats it hands down. You can get dye for any liquid system (oil, trans., p.s., a/c, cooant). It is a great time saver, takes all the guess-work out of leak detection. Kind of fun, too.
Get the dye specifically made for oil leaks, it should be in the same section. Put half the bottle in the engine and run it for 10-15 min, then check with the UV and glasses. You can use it for transmission leaks also
will i need to change the oil after i do this? or can the dye stay in indefinitely?
The dye won't harm anything. Works beautifully. I have the AutoZone kit as well. Different vials for different fluids (antifreeze, transmision/crankcase, A/C).
