OT - need suggestions please
I have a personal website that I built about a year or so ago. Many of you have already been on it. I keep pictures of my (our) vettes on there including progress pics when i'm working on projects on the cars, I have a nice tech articles section that many people on here have gone to to download tech articles, etc.
In addition, there are sections on the website for my wife to put up her interests, a section for our pets, sections for pics from vacations, parties, etc my wife and I have done, and even a humor section.
The site is here: http://69.253.166.197/index.html
now, here is the point of the above...... I've been hosting the site on my own personal computer here at home since it's a Mac and it has a built-in apache webserver so it's free and easy. For a few technical reasons though it does make things slightly more difficult when I need to link to pictures or articles, etc on the site into forum messages, etc. no need to get into the technical issues but I can only access the site thru my internal network IP address rather than the public IP address as I listed above and all the rest of you would access the site through. Not to mention that my broadband connection has a dynamic IP adress so it can change at anytime cancelling out any bookmarks people made have saved of my site to find my tech articles page again, etc.
I am now seriously considering moving the website to a seperate web hosting company since I found what seems like a decent one and it's pretty inexpensive.
Now, after all of this long discussion I have a question and need suggestions on a good Domain Name to choose.
Since my wifes name is Linda I was thinking alone the lines of something like lbcorvettes.com (lb for Linda/Barry) but i'm not even sure I necessarily want to use the word corvettes in the domain name.
I'm not very "creative" so coming up with a good domain name is simply eluding me so if you go and look at the website and and see what's it's all about I was hoping that maybe some of you might come up with some good names I could consider for a nice domain name for the website. Something fairly simple. I think shorter is better than a long name and something easy to remember.
Thanks for any help and ideas you may have!
Barry
I surf quite a bit...I find it better to remember a site name when it is simple or "catchy"...ie summitracing is easy and simple. Corvettejunk.com is a real site that to me has a catchy name...
Maybe something like Barryfastcars.com Yes..long, but catchy and simple.
Just my .02.

I agree, something simple or catchy is best. I guess that's what I meant when I mentioned something "short, simple, and easy to remember".
"Catchy" would work also as long as it's easy to remember.
Not sure I want "just" my name on it though since part of the site is about Linda, part of it about the pets, etcs even though the majotity of it is about the corvettes. not to mention that the '78 vette is now more 'hers" than 'mine".

If it was just me and/or only the vattes on the site I would have liked your idea!
that's the problem though....... the site contains various areas of interest in our lives so a domain name that only describes one area of interest disregards all the rest.
It's NOT like i'm worried about the search engines missing the site because of a bad domain name since it's only to give out to family, friends, and on the various forums we visit
BarryEast.com or EasternBarry.com
You're car is red, so:
RedBarry.com
I think your name should be in it's title.
LinBar.com
BarLin.com
DingleBarry.com
VeryBarry.com
Just a few.
That would also solve your IP/links issue.

Hackers, viruses, etc are not exactly a big concern of mine not to mention two seperate and very good firewalls!

BTW, the IP and linking issue is because of the router. Most consumer routers don't support a feature called "Loopback" which means I can't 'see" anything that's links from the public IP address - only what's linked from the internal IP. That means for example if I try to directly link and post an image in a message I need to copy the web address, change the internal IP adress that is on MY browser address bar to the public IP address so that you all can see the image but than I see the image in the posted message to make sure it's correct. Inconvienent and a PITA to deal with.
For $3-$4/month it will just be easier to move the site off my own computer and not have the problems. also easier to trouble shoot problems that way since I will be able to see the site thru the normal public IP address same as everyone else. right now if there is an IP address problem and nobody is able to access the site I'm not aware of it unless someone takes the effort to actually tell me since it's always available to me thru the internal network IP address.
see, it's kinda neat but at the same time just a bit too crazy and inconvient to host on your own computer.

I like it!
The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
I know. I do it. I have NHvette.com running off my personal PC with dynamic IP.
www.dyndns.com
A small application polls the IP and reports any changes to dynamic
IP, which are then updated in DNS. I enrolled in the basic (free) service.
I'm not sure if they still offer this free service to new subscribers.
Despite this, I have also considered hosting services.
My domain provider is offering 2years for the price of one.
For just over $100, I can get 2 years with 10G storage, 500G monthly
bandwidth and a bunch of other bells/whistles.
Still debating ...

Ok enough of my off topic ranting about macs.
For a web name I'd say go with something simple and easily remembered. Is your username commonly "BarryK"? If so I'd use www.barryk.com because everyone will remember it. If your username varies a bit then some of the previous mentioned names like www.fastvettebarry.com or something of that nature would be good, too. (PS- Your webpage is very slow! That mac is killing your page's speed!
j/k it's probably just the upload bandwidth getting drained to death)

I love fixing and building computers. Shame MAC users find it hard to enjoy that passion.

A lot of times my fixes for computers at work, though, is just re-imaging them. Takes 10 - 15 minutes and they have everything installed and are back to where they should be. Hardware related... takes me 5 minutes to disassemble and test to figure out the part gone bad. Usually hard drives or power supplies are the main things to die.
I hated fixing RAIDs where I used to work. If I had to wait for a drive, then re-load everything. Pissed me off.
If it was mine I'd call it "mywebsite.com" but I'm sure that one is taken
What about BarryandLinda.com ??

Kalway, OK, OK, enough of the Mac bashing!
BTW, no, it's not a new Intel Mac, it's an older G4 Tower with the PowerPC chip. and yes, I'm well aware the issue w/ viruses, etc are because few are written for the MacOS and I like it that way. apple doesn't make a penny off me on repairs because in all the years my wife and I have run Macs the VERY rare times i've run into a problem or issue I fix it myself. Unless it's hardware related such as a harddrive dying on me simply because of age (i give hardrives a life of 3 years now than replace them before they die) it's usually a software glitch and since the OS went to OSX I've NEVER had an OS glitch at all, not once. The Mac OS is solid as a rock.
sorry if downloads are slow, I actually wasn't aware of that problem but i'm sure it's because of my Comcast broadband. With comcast broadband downloads for me are very quick but uploads are not especially fast. Yet another reason for me to move the site to a webhosting company.
Durango, I enjoy USING computers, not FIXING them - to me an advantage to the Macs
