Default Stuborn Balancer.

I was attemting to finish a few things while in teh garage, and I decided it was time to install the balancer. I have a kit I bought a few years ago and used once to make install easier. It's supposedly a heavy duty kit.

I lined up the balancer with the key, and installed the tool. The first inch or so went very smooth, and it started to get tough. When I could not force it on any further, I stopped, and took the tool out. I noticed a few of the last threads used were buggered, and it was hard getting the tightening nut off.

The balancer is close to seated, tested by installing the crank pulley and water pump pulley. Maybe only an 1/8" off at this point.

With the last few threads crapped, and maybe crossed...how can I expect to get the balancer on any further without destroying the thraeded shaft.

I did everything I knew how. Used the bearing in the kit as I was supposed to, and oiled the shaft the nut tightened on. Did I miss a step? I've never had this hard a time installing a balancer.

Thanks for the opinions.

Nevermind. I got it on.

I un-installed the balancer, cleaned up the snout again, and re-oiled it. The, I chased the threads on the installer shaft, and put it all back on with lots of oil. Then, got back to the dead spot I hit, and I just turned through it another five or six threads. Managed to get it to slide in further without stripping the shaft. I tested with the pulleys and I'm pretty much dead on. Hurray for me.

Default Yea thats a very common thing to do.

In my case i discovered i installed the puller the wrong way even though i took the time to look it over before using. Easy to figure it wrong but lucky the crank snout threads cleaned up and all is better now.
I won't do it again though.

lots of people seem to have problems.

I don't understand why it has to be such a tight press fit.

I say take a dremel and polish up the inside of the balance so it slides on easier and put locktite on the bolt.

It aint going anywhere.

That's kind of what I always thought too...but I wouldn't imagine them being a press fit unless it was for a good reason. I don't know of an engine that has a straight up bolt on balancer.
