TH350 swap to a 200 4r? I have a G-body and we would throw those transmissions away and swap in a TH350... am I missing somethin?

some C-3ers like the 200r for the overdrive 4th gear. keeps the rpms down. dissers have complained of problems and poor reliability with the 200r. you know the drill. opinions are like a**holes. everybody has one.

Ah I see, That's reasonable... but why not a 700r4? just curious. I tried to convince my dad to put in a 5 or 6spd into his 73 convert. (btw I'm not a purest)

Thanks for clarifying

i believe the 200r can be swapped out virtually directly with the 350 with a bare minimum of modifications. i don't think that's true with the 700. i believe that requires quite a bit of mods (and know how). others may have more to say about this.

I just put a 200R in my '77 Vette last week and it is GREAT. I was turning 3100 RPM at 70MPH and now it is around 2200 to 2400 RPM. I have not put in a lock up yet so that should give me another 200 to 300 RPM drop. It is GREAT!! I have not checked milage yet been having too much fun with the lower first gear taking off faster! I used a 400 Turbo cross member but after I looked at the cross member I had with my 350 tranny I think the 350 one will work just fine. Just unbolt the extra plate and bolt through the holes. The 700 R is longer and you will have to change the drive shaft. With the 200R you don't have to change the drive shaft. Just buy a BEEFED up 200 R and you won't have any trouble. The shop that built mine said he has them holding up to 10 second drag cars. Just be sure you set your detent cable right.

Additional mods over a 200R4 to install a 700R4 are shorter driveshaft and different mods to the crossmember. You can buy a nice tubular crossmember from BowTie. Local driveshaft shop can shorten your driveshaft. No big deal. Either way you need lockup, TV cable, and linkage.

Howell, Street and Performance, Painless, etc sell a lockup kit. If you have done a fuel injection swap, you can let the computer lock it. If you had a TH350 with lockup you can still use that.

I've done a lot of mod. "stuff" to my 78 but the BowTies 2004R was the very best thing I have done! I did add a rocker switch to force it out of overdrive for those times when I'm in traffic and need to be able to accelerate to keep up with traffic flow. I don't drag race mine so I don't think I will ever have a problem with the 2004R.

I have not put a lock up on mine as of yet. I think I am going to use a B&M 70244 It hooks to the speed o cable and to the electric in the tranny and you can set to lock up from 30 MPH to 90 MPH. I have a vaccum one on my '50 chevy coupe and it locks as soon as it goes into over drive. By being able to set the lock up at any speed with the turn of a **** looks good to me. You can adjust it at any time. Most all lockups are in the $70 to $90 area and this one is $159 in Summit
