Compressor leaking?
My 1974 convertible's air conditioning compressor is leaking at the front seal. I can see where the oil/freon slinged out and has left an oil line under my hood. My car is a 2 owner original and would like to have MY original low mileage seal replaced in my compressor. Has anyone out there done it and if so how much? No one locally (Ontario Canada) will do it. I will over the holidays be in southwest Florida if someone knows someone in that area as well figuring air is a must in that area.

Couple issues.
First, while the seal can be purchased and installed, you're left with a de-pressurized system. This causes two issues.
Frist: The coolant is not something you can just go out and buy and put in yourself. The coolant itself has been out of use for a long time, and even black market stuff is hard to find and expensive.
Second: Even if you did manage to buy some coolant, flushing and filling the system is not something you can do in your own garage unless you have the proper equipment...and I doubt you or any of your neighbors have it.
I would suggest searching far and wide for a shop that will perform an A/C service on your car. You may have to go as far as the states border to find a good shop.
Here, a flush and fill is ually only around $80, so add the cost of the seal, puttin git in, and the cost of the coolant.

The system has been discharged. There are people that will replace the dryer, evacuate sytem, add oil and recharge locally but they all want to sell me a rebuilt compressor. I have heard only bad results and I was hoping someone could recommend a shop that I could ship my original compressor to have the front seal replaced and then take it to a local shop to charge etc.

I don't have any clue when things go that far north, but we have a lot of members up there and someone will pop in to help out.
