I'm looking for anything that will give tips from people that have put an LT1 manifold on a Gen1, and more specifically, in a car like my '77.

Godless78, my .02....keep her all stock. You've got what looks like a really nice example of a '78 S/A car. Drive her and enjoy her for what she is - a great car with great performance FOR THE TIME. My '82 is a good example of this. She was a great performance car for it's time but can be blown away by most any car on the road today - she's a great cruiser today and serves me well, yours will too!

Before you start throwing money on your vette by buying parts, etc., make sure you have gotten full measure out of what you have. By that, you can tweak existing parts (distributor, carburetor, etc.) and when everything is working at its full potential, it will feel like you picked up more HP. Then you have a strong base to start with all of the good suggestions so far.
P.S. If you aren't going to keep it stock, I'd go headers and true duals as first mods...

Right now I plan on just tuning it up and getting the most I can out of the stock but eventually as money allows I want to get a crate engine to drop in so I can keep all the stock parts together.

That's a great starting point, but without a good way to get air and fuel it...the exhaust can't perform to it's fullest. I would suggest a package upgrade. Better flowing intake, well tuned high CFM carb, and headers with 2.5" true duals.
