I have heard that some people remove the guts from their cats, I know this is against federal law and has hefty fines and I of course would never dream of doing this to my 82 CFI, BUT just wondering how those people do this.

You might consider replacing the old catalytic converter with a legal high performance unit. Most of the major vendors sell them.
Yup ... I used a 1/2" pipe and BF hammer.
It was still attached in front (Buick). After punching it through,
I revved her up and blew all the pieces out.
In this day and age you can get a high flow cat which would be the way to go in my thinking if you have to have a cat that is.
In the old days we used to take the cat and cut an I in the top of the cat that you could not see spread it open and take everything out then weld it back up and install it back in the car.
