Default I'm having choke issues

I have a oe QJ on my 79 L48.

The fast idle cam won't engage... I can manually engage it if I open the throttle and move the cam to the engaged position and let of the throttle.

I referenced the Doug Roe book on rochester carbs but haven't been able to find something that references my particular choke setup. As far as I can tell there should be some kind of rod that rotates the cam into position when the throttle is depressed to the WOT position. The secondary throttle lockout lever seems to be free floating... shouldn't it be contacting the fast idle cam in some way?

suggestions or maybe even the ever important pic would be appreciated.

Thanks

are you saying it doesn't engage when the choke is fully closed?

That'd be my guess. How long has it been since it was rebuilt? It may be time to do that.

I do not have my carb book handy (sitting at the office), but I recall the choke spring moves a tang that controls rotation of the fast idle cam. The spring might be broken or gunked up...

I would like to rebuild it... But, I would like everything in working order so I have a working model to refer to when it comes time to put it all back together...

As far as I can tell the only thing connected to the fast idle cam is the thermostatic coil... so when it's cold the spring/coil should place the cam in the fast idle position & as it warms or expands it releases the cam and allows it to "disengage"? I'm guessing here...

back to the Rochester carb manual for now...

This was what I was trying to describe. The coil should still be operational, and the coil housing should also be adjustable by loosening the three retaining screws and rotating cw or ccw to 'tune' where the cam steps are engaged vs. engine/coil temperature. There is a stock setting documented, but I do not recall if it was in the carb book or the rebuild kit data sheet.
