Sounds like somehow a fuel line was pierced. FI cars have quite a bit of pressure built by the pump in the tank and leaks can spray a fine mist of fuel. After the exhuast heated up to op-temp and a fine mist of fuel added, bad news.
But who knows,..sad though.
