Hi guys, I'm new to the forum. I just bought a wrecked 71 LT1 car and am looking to replace the body shell. There was extensive damage to the rear inner structure, as well as the cowl area, both on the passenger side.
This will not be a numbers matching showpiece as the original engine was swapped out at some time for a '69 350 hp 350, which is complete and is for sale. It is a correct vette HW code.
...so anyway, if anyone knows of a body shell -coupe or convertible- please drop an email to jc82776@msn.com
Thanks, Dave
Hmmm. Have you considered the disparity in VINs? Your car has your VIN. If you buy a body, it will have a VIN (should, anyway). You might want to check with the DMV in your state regarding whether you can make this kind of swap and be able to title/license the car.
I've had to change windshield frames before on these cars, as they are almost always rotten here in NY. Your only choice is to re-rivet the VIN onto the new frame. Also, here in NY, titles are not used for anything older than '73. Any vehicle prior to that can be licenced by simply providing a pencil tracing of the VIN number and a bill of sale. So anyway, getting it licenced is a non issue, and I'll gladly take a body that is missing it's tags. Thanks for the reply! -Dave

In my state, you cannot swap out the VIN tag; it's against the law. Titles are required here or you can't license the vehicle. Getting it licensed here would be a genuine issue.
That's why I advised you check with your DMV to see what you could or could not do.
Better safe than sorry.

I agree, I know some states would have a field day throwing the book at you. I think the important thing is to document everything with photos, receipts, bill of sale, etc. Sometimes you have to do it to save that car!
Take a peek on eBay, there are many collector cars being offered / sold without VIN or cowl tags. Somehow they are getting back on the road. Or what about those fiberglass body 34 Fords and the like? What do you do in that situation? Or how about replacing your rotted out Jeep body with a fiberglass replacement, at some point you need to transfer your VIN tag to the new body. It happens all the time, I guess in some states your risk is higher than others, but at least if you document everything you can keep out of trouble, hopefully!
Just minutes ago I located a nice 72 convertible shell for $1000 with the title. It is rust free and the fiberglass is good. This could not be a better find for me. I was able to locate this one using a "want it now" posting on eBay. I have used this method before with great success.
....so now I still need a front clip, and I also would like to use a big block hood. Keep your eyes peeled!
