Default Rocker panel Discoloraton

I have a 77 vette and the rocker panels have a discoloration of some sort. I have tried aluminum wheel polish but it had no effect. Is there anything else I can try, or do I just need to buy new ones?

looks like they were damaged with some sort of cleaner (aluminum wash ???) most likely will require new ones

Try This First, I Did This To Mine And They Came Out Like New-except They Were Shinney, like Polished Aluminum--get Your Self A Spray Can Of Paint And Decal Remover-and Some Very Fine Steel Wool-spray It Down Let Her Set Awhile ,wash It Off,may Take A Couple Of Applications.then Polish It Up With The Steel Wool.

why not try a foam sanding pad of a fine grit 400 or a scoth brite pad and try sanding them....after the stain is gone keep going to a finer grit add some polish and you can make them as shiny as you want

those are just stainless steel....you should be able to sand them a bit and then buff them out to look like new.

The ones on my 78 are aluminum and had an anodized coating. I used Easy Off oven cleaner to remove the anodized coating and buffed with polishing compound, then clear coated, and now they look brand new.

Do I have to be concerned about the black painted portion of the panel? Will the cleaner do any damage to the paint?

Also, what did you use for the clear coat?

Yes, the black paint will also be removed along with the anodized coating. Spray the trim with the oven cleaner and let it sit for a couple of minutes and you will see it start to turn the aluminum white. Rinse off the cleaner with water. If you still see some shinny spots spray it again with the oven cleaner and rinse. Start buffing, you can use a variable speed drill with a buffing wheel; Lowes sells the wheels and the buffing compounds. I used Eastwood Satin black wheel paint #100852 and there Satin clear coat # 103002. It sounds like a lot of work but it goes really easy, plus a set of news from Zip is $270 + shipping. Have fun!!
