At higher speeds(100+) they create downward force to prevent rear end lift. I believe those superbird wings were attached to a support frame in the trunk. They weren't simply a bolt-on to the trunk.

My best friend and I hit 146mph on the way to high school in his 'Bird, in 1973. The wing worked!! He still owns it, it sits in a small corrugated metal building behind his boarded up Exxon station, just outside of a town of 400(population) in eastern NC. In a state of deterioration, hasnt run since the late 70's, I'd guess. Though 100% original and never in any collision. His is the 440/4 barrel, the most common of the 3 engines offered. I've often thought about making him an offer, though like many, I think he thinks its worth more than it really is (probably $30-$40k as it sits, prob near $100k redone?)

Back in the day, a friend had one of these with a 348 tri-power and said that at 110+ he had an "uplifting experience".

Kind of the opposite effect............

The wing doesn't look that good, but if it wins races then that makes up for it. Sometimes the most areodynamic wings and bodies aren't that appealing. Like stated above that is not bolted to a flimsly trunk lid and tilted at the wrong angle like our ricer friends

Built specifically with Nascar races in mind...the production cars had to wear them as well. Until Nascar outlawed them

OK, I am going out on a limb here. That car is nice if it is correct as raced in the day. I wouldn't think about road racing him. The wing might be nessecary at 200 MPH! Might be ugly, might be scary fast and handle like it's on rails at 150 plus.

This is the ultimate in factory rice. It is a Chinese made sportscar with an adjustable rear spoiler.
The rear wing's height is adjustable, apparently by way of an old-fashioned bellows-type device, or else the D120 has a built in accordian underneath its rear hatch

It cracks me up when ricers put those huge wings on their car. Not just because it looks stupid, but because they believe it makes their car go faster! How can anyone actually believe that adding an almost parachute like wing to a car will make it go faster? If your car can actually go fast enough to even need a wing it still doesn't make you go any faster. It "allows" you to go faster.

It would actually do the exact opposite. It would push the rear end down resulting in lift on the front.
